SUBJECT AREA: Medical technology[br]b. 4 April 1835 Providence Green, Yorkshire, Englandd. 7 October 1911 London, England[br]English neurologist and neurophysiologist, discoverer of Jacksonian epilepsy and the neurological basis of speech defects; pioneer of the technique of the localization of the site of cerebral disease.[br]Jackson studied medicine at York and at St Bartholomew's Hospital, qualifying in 1856. For a while he practised in York and was dissuaded from abandoning medicine for philosophy by Jonathan Hutchinson. Upon his return to London, he was appointed Assistant Physician and later, in 1874, Physician to the London Hospital. He was also on the staff of Moorfields Eye Hospital and in 1874 was appointed to the National Hospital for the Paralysed and Epileptic in Queen's Square. It was particularly in connection with his association with cases at the latter that he was able to establish the association of designated areas of the brain with specific limbs and functions. He acknowledged that in the field of speech the work of Broca had shown the way.[br]Principal Honours and DistinctionsFRS 1878. 8 Türck, Ludwig
SUBJECT AREA: Medical technology[br]b. 22 July 1810 Vienna, Austriad. 25 February 1868 Vienna, Austria[br]Austrian neurologist, developer of the techniques of laryngoscopy.[br]The son of a wealthy jeweller, he attended medical school in Vienna and qualified in 1836. Until 1844 he was engaged in research into the anatomy and physiology of the nervous system. In 1844, while on a visit to Paris, he came to the attention of Baron Türckheim, Director of the General Hospital in Vienna. The consequence was the establishment of a special division of the hospital for nervous diseases, with Türck in charge. In 1857 he was appointed Chief Physician to the largest hospital in Vienna and at the same time he became aware of the invention in 1855 by Manuel García, a music teacher of Paris, of a practical laryngoscope. Türck adapted the apparatus to clinical purposes and proceeded to establish the diagnostic and therapeutic techniques required for its efficient use. Some conflict over priority ensued following a publication by Johann Nepomuk Czermak in 1858, but eventually a professional declaration asserted Türck's priority.[br]Bibliography1862, Recherches cliniques sur diverses maladies du larynx, de la trachée et du pharynx étudiées à l'aide du laryngoscope, Paris.Papers in Allgemein. SUBJECT AREA: Medical technology[br]b. 26 September 1877 Treviso, Italyd. 25 July 1963 Rome, Italy[br]Italian psychiatrist who was the originator, with L.Bini, of electroconvulsive therapy for severe psychiatric disorders.[br]Cerletti qualified in medicine at the University of Turin in 1901. Following some years as an assistant in the psychiatric clinic, during which he demonstrated the presence of spirochaetes in the brain of syphylitics, he was appointed in 1919 Director of the Istituto Neurologica A.Varga in Milan. In 1924 he moved to the University of Bari, and then in 1928 to the faculty of medicine in Genoa. In 1935 he assumed the directorship of the clinic for mental and nervous diseases in the University of Rome, and it was there, following the precedent of the treatment of mania, depression and schizophrenia by insulin or cardiazol shock, that Cerletti and Bini, who assisted with the apparatus, administered electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) to their first patient in April 1935. The results appeared to be at least comparable with the other agents, and although the rationale of the treatment has never been fully clarified it gained a wide degree of acceptance for many years, even up to the 1990s.[br]Principal Honours and DistinctionsPresident, Italian Psychiatric Society 1946–59. Soon after graduating in July 1885, he was appointed Professor of Physiology at Leiden. In 1895, while involved in the study of the electric action potentials of the heart, he developed the sensitive string galvanometer, and in 1896 he was able to register the electrocardiograms of animals and humans, relating them to the heart sounds. Developing this work, he not only established the detailed geometry of the leads for these recordings, but was able to build up an insight into their variations in different forms of heart disease. In 1924 he further investigated the action currents of the sympathetic nervous system.[br]Principal Honours and DistinctionsNobel Prize for Medicine or Physiology 1924.Bibliography1895, "Uber die form des menschlichen Elektrocardiogramms", Pflügers Archiv.Further Readingde Waart, 1957, Einthoven, Haarlem (complete list of works).MG -
